I am doing an essay on women’s health issues and have chosen to go with body image as an issue. Just want to get some ideas/broading my thoughts on what i should discuss so i am asking for your opinion. Why is body image an issue for women? Im enclined to discuss nutrional issues, fertility issues and social/relationship issues. What do you think?
Thanks for your imput :)

I don’t think body image is a health issue. I think it is a self confidence issue. Women see things and hear things all the time about what/how our bodies should look like. What our "ideal" weight should be, and it is annoying. No one can tell me how I am suppose to look. Your genes are what make you who you are whether you believe that or not. Some people are just born healthier than others and unless they work there asses off there whole life they will continue to be fat. I have a huge issue with my body I don’t feel comfortable in a bikini I need a lil work but If their were no men in this world we would all be a bunch of fat happy women! :)

    yay :) essays :)

Ok i reckon you could do:

Girls are more focused on by the media to be ‘sexy’ and physically atttracting to others.

People in general naturally think the worst of themselves, so therefore means that girls will find their weight, compared to other girls and media and then will get bulimia (vomiting to reduce weight) or anorexia( not eating)

Do some research on magazines such as cosmo and vogue. (I did a similar report years ago) but they airbrush their models to sizes that are impossible. I also read that if Barbie’s sizes were real sizes for a person, she wouldnt be able to hold herself up. This is what are young people want to be like. Its impossible…no wonder eating disorders are so prevalent. So now, even the size 0 models are too fat for covers.

Hi, may I contribute: firstly, your question constitutes the first part of the remedy: exploring the root causes – how many women stop to ask this question, reflect & discover WHO is responsible for determining ‘body image’ – answer: it should be the self. AHA, but then we have to dig deeper and ask, if this is so, why is there so much external rather than internal directive? Herein lies the basis for your research …firstly profit…scary but true. First reason is that there is a lot of money to be made to keep women believing that they are less than perfect & have to alter themselves; the second reason, which is more controversial, is that we live in a male dominated world. The characteristics & ‘role models’ that are held up, are aligned with what appeals to men, not what is relevent to women. If u want to discuss further, pls email. Grad student/ now doing 2nd degree. All the best…Go WOMEN
